Department For Work And Pensions Christmas Bonus Pension

Government to pay Christmas Bonus to eight million pensioners

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that around eight million pensioners across the UK will receive a £10 Christmas Bonus this winter.

The one-off payment will be made alongside state pensions in the week commencing 12 December 2022.

The Christmas Bonus is a tax-free payment made to those who are receiving a state pension or another qualifying benefit in the qualifying week, which runs from 26 November to 19 December 2022.

Pensioners will not need to claim the Christmas Bonus. It will be paid automatically to those eligible.

The qualifying benefits that can include people of pensionable age are:

  • State Pension
  • Widow's Pension
  • Widower's Pension
  • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers whose spouse died before 6 April 2014)

The Christmas Bonus was first introduced in 1972. It is intended to help pensioners with the extra costs that can occur during the Christmas period.

The government has confirmed that the Christmas Bonus will continue to be paid in future years.
